Short answer
Before renting a scooter or motorbike in Bali, check the tires, brakes, lights, horn, mirrors, steering, engine sound, fuel level, scratches, registration documents, helmet and rental agreement. Take a clear video before leaving. A five-minute inspection can prevent deposit disputes, breakdowns and unsafe rides.

- This checklist comes from real handovers and returns: scratches, phone holders, mirrors, tires, fuel level and keys are the things that create most avoidable arguments.
- A professional rental company should be comfortable with you filming the bike before you ride. That protects both sides.
- The goal is not to make rental complicated. The goal is to start the ride with the same condition record that will be used when the bike is returned.
Why inspection matters
Most rental problems are easier to prevent than to solve. A small scratch, weak brake or old tire can become a deposit argument later. A proper inspection protects both the rider and the rental company.
Do the inspection in daylight whenever possible. If the bike is delivered at night, use a phone flashlight and record a video slowly from all sides.
Mechanical checks
Start with the things that affect safety. Tires should have visible tread and no obvious cracks. Brakes should feel firm. Lights and indicators should work. Mirrors should be tight enough to stay in place. The horn should work because Bali traffic uses sound as part of communication.
If the steering feels strange, the engine makes unusual noise or the bike vibrates heavily, ask for another unit before riding away.
| Part | What to check |
|---|---|
| Tires | Tread, cracks, pressure and visible damage |
| Brakes | Front and rear brake response |
| Lights | Headlight, brake light, indicators |
| Mirrors | Position and stability |
| Horn | Works clearly |
| Steering | No heavy pull or strange movement |
| Engine | Starts normally, no warning signs |
| Fuel | Record level at delivery |
Body and damage video
Record the bike before you leave. Walk around it slowly and film panels, mirrors, levers, exhaust, wheels, seat, phone holder and any existing scratches. Make sure the date and location can be understood from the video.
Send the video to the company on WhatsApp if possible. This creates a shared record and avoids arguments when the bike is returned.
Documents and accessories
Ask where the registration copy is kept and what number to contact in an emergency. Check helmet fit before riding. If you use a phone holder, make sure it does not scratch the tank or body and holds the phone securely.
Do not ignore small problems
A weak brake, bald tire or broken light is not a small problem in Bali. Rain, sand, traffic and steep roads make small defects more dangerous. Ask the company to fix it or replace the bike.

Our Handover Process Recommendation
At handover, film the motorcycle before the first ride. Start from the front, walk slowly around both sides, show the mirrors, levers, body panels, wheels, tires, exhaust, seat, fuel level, key and any accessories. If the bike has a phone holder, film how it is installed.
This video should be made before the bike leaves the delivery point. If there is a scratch or part issue later, both the renter and the company can compare the condition clearly instead of arguing from memory.
Most Common Issues to Catch Early
Old or low-pressure tires
Weak brake response
Existing scratches on side panels
Loose mirrors or levers
Phone holder marks or poor installation
Fuel level mismatch
Missing second helmet or accessory
Smart key or remote problems
FAQ
Should I take photos or video before renting?
Video is best because it captures the full condition of the bike. Photos are useful too.
What if I notice damage after delivery?
Message the rental company immediately with photos or video before riding further.
Should I accept a bike with bald tires?
No. Ask for another bike or new tires.
Do I need to check the helmet?
Yes. A helmet should fit correctly, close properly and not be visibly damaged.
Where should bike documents be kept?
The company should tell you where registration documents or copies are kept and what to show during checks.
Can I add my own phone holder?
Ask the company first. Poorly installed holders can scratch the bike or damage parts.
