Should you leave your passport as a deposit?
No. A passport is your main travel document, and leaving the original with a rental shop creates unnecessary risk. A professional rental company should accept a copy of your passport plus a normal deposit method, such as cash, bank transfer or card payment, depending on company policy.
If a shop insists on keeping the original passport, that is a warning sign. It does not automatically mean the company is bad, but it is not a customer-friendly practice.
