Short answer
If you damage a rental scooter or motorbike in Bali, the company will usually inspect the bike, estimate repair costs and deduct valid costs from the deposit or charge the renter according to the rental agreement. Insurance or damage protection may reduce liability, but it usually depends on correct license, helmet use, sober riding, authorized rider and accident reporting from the scene.

- This article reflects real rental disputes: scratches, broken mirrors, lost keys, crash damage, late reporting, unauthorized riders and unclear expectations about deposits.
- Bike in Bali / Iron Rent offers Damage & Loss Protection options, but this is not the same as unlimited full insurance. The conditions matter.
- We use careful wording here because the most expensive mistake is assuming that every kind of damage is automatically covered.
Damage is not only about scratches
Damage can mean a scratch, broken mirror, bent lever, damaged phone holder, lost key, flat tire, broken body panel, engine damage, crash damage or theft. Each case is different, so the rental agreement should explain what is covered and what is not.
The most important rule is simple: document the bike before rental and contact the company immediately if something happens.
How deposits usually work
A deposit is not an extra fee. It is security for unpaid rent, missing accessories, traffic fines, damage or other contract obligations. If the bike is returned on time and in the same condition, the deposit should be returned according to the company policy.
If there is damage, the company may deduct repair costs. For expensive bikes, deposits are higher because parts, labor and downtime cost more.
| Situation | Typical result |
|---|---|
| Small scratch | Repair or repaint cost may be deducted |
| Broken mirror or lever | Replacement part and labor cost |
| Lost key | Key replacement or lock system cost |
| Crash damage | Repair estimate and liability according to agreement |
| Unauthorized rider | Protection may be void |
| Riding drunk | Protection may be void |
| Theft | Handled under theft and liability terms |
Insurance vs damage protection
Many rental products are not full insurance in the way tourists imagine. Some companies offer damage protection or liability reduction. This may reduce what the renter pays above a deductible, but it is usually conditional.
Read the exact terms. Ask what happens if repair costs are below the deductible, above the deductible, or if the bike is stolen.
When protection may not apply
Protection may be refused if the rider has no valid license, no IDP, was drunk, let another person ride, left the scene, did not contact the company, used the bike outside allowed areas or violated the rental agreement.
This is why documents and accident procedure are not formalities. They decide whether the protection actually works.
What to do after damage or accident
Stop safely, check injuries, take photos and videos, get the other vehicle plate if involved, call police if needed and contact the rental company immediately. Do not repair the bike yourself without approval.
If the bike is damaged
Stop safely and check injuries
Take photos of bike, road and other vehicles
Record plates and contacts if another party is involved
Contact the rental company immediately
Do not leave the scene without documentation
Do not promise payment before the facts are clear
Do not repair the bike without company approval
Keep all repair invoices or police documents
Bike in Bali Damage & Loss Protection Options
Bike in Bali / Iron Rent offers Damage & Loss Protection options that reduce renter liability when the conditions are followed. These are liability reduction products for the rented motorcycle, not unlimited full insurance for every possible situation.
| Protection option | Renter share if repair is above deductible |
|---|---|
| MAX | 5% after deductible |
| MIN | 30% after deductible |
Typical Deductible by Bike Class
| Bike class | Deductible |
|---|---|
| Scooters | IDR 3,000,000 |
| 250cc 2-cylinder | IDR 5,000,000 |
| 250cc 4-cylinder | IDR 10,000,000 |
| 400-600cc | IDR 15,000,000 |
| 600cc+ | IDR 20,000,000 |
| 1000cc | IDR 30,000,000 |
If the repair cost is below the deductible, the repair cost is usually deducted from the deposit. If the repair cost is above the deductible, the renter pays the full deductible and then the remaining amount is split according to the selected protection option.
When Protection Can Be Void
Protection may not apply if the renter was drunk, had no valid motorcycle license, allowed someone else to ride, violated the rental agreement, did not contact the company from the scene, left the scene without documentation or used the motorcycle outside the approved area.
