Where you stay decides what you should ride. Canggu is dense, flat and jammed — an automatic scooter is the right tool and a big bike is wasted in traffic. Ubud is hills, rain and long day rides — a 150–250cc motorcycle with real suspension earns its price. Uluwatu is steep roads, wind and beach car parks — a scooter for the cliffs, a mid-size bike if you plan to cover the whole south. Canggu and Seminyak: the scooter belt
Cafés, surf, coworking and the worst traffic on the island. Distances are short — Berawa to Batu Bolong is ten minutes if the shortcut is open, forty if it is not. Parking is tight, roads are narrow, and at 17:00 nothing moves. Here an automatic scooter wins on every count: it filters through the jam, it parks anywhere, it costs 200,000 IDR a day and a fraction of that on a month. A Honda PCX 160 or Yamaha NMAX 155 is the local standard; the Fazzio if you want something smaller. A sport bike in Canggu spends its life in first gear. Rent the big bike for the day you leave Canggu, not for living in it.
Ubud: hills, rain and real distances
Ubud is not a village any more, but everything worth riding to is outside it: Tegallalang, Tampaksiring, the rice terraces of Sidemen, the road up to Kintamani and Batur. That is an hour each way on steep, wet, often broken roads. A scooter can do it, but a 150–250cc motorcycle with suspension travel and real brakes does it comfortably: a Honda CB150X or Kawasaki KLX 230 for the back roads, a CB500X or Versys if you plan the north coast too. Rain is daily in the wet season; whatever you ride, budget the first ten minutes of every shower for waiting under a roof. If you stay in the centre and only go out for dinner, a scooter is enough.
Uluwatu and the Bukit: steep, windy, spread out
The Bukit peninsula is cliffs, beaches down long steep lanes, and a 20-minute ride between anything and anything else. A scooter handles the beach car parks and the lanes to Bingin and Padang Padang; a 150cc automatic is fine for two people and a surfboard rack. If you plan to ride out of the Bukit regularly — Nusa Dua, Sanur, the airport, Canggu — the bypass is fast and windy and a 250cc motorcycle is more relaxed. Fuel: fill up at Pecatu; the lanes to the beaches have none.
Sanur, Nusa Dua and Jimbaran: the calm south
Flat, wide, quiet roads, families and older travellers. The easiest riding in Bali and the right place to spend a first day on a scooter before Canggu. A scooter covers everything; the Sanur–Kusamba coast road east is a good first longer ride on any bike.
Two areas in one trip
Many people split a stay: a week in Canggu, a week in Ubud or Uluwatu. You do not need two bikes.
