Short answer
For a short stay in one area with a few trips a day, Grab and Gojek are cheap and require nothing from you. For anything else — a week or more, more than one area, beaches and mountains, the freedom to leave when you want — a rented motorbike wins on cost and on time. The break-even is roughly four rides a day: above that, a scooter at 200,000 IDR per day is cheaper than ride-hailing, and a monthly rental at 2,000,000 IDR is cheaper than two rides a day.

What each costs
A GrabBike or GoRide ride across Canggu costs 15,000–30,000 IDR; Canggu to Seminyak 30,000–50,000; Canggu to Ubud 150,000–250,000 and often no driver wants to go. Waiting time at peak hours is 10–20 minutes, and in the rain it is longer. A rented scooter is 200,000 IDR per day on a 3–6 day rental, less per day on a week, and about 2,000,000 IDR for a month — 67,000 per day.
So at four short rides a day you have spent a day of scooter rental; at two rides a day for a month you have spent more than a monthly rental. Fuel adds around 15,000–25,000 IDR per day of normal riding.
When Grab and Gojek are the better choice
You are in Bali for two or three days. You stay in one neighbourhood and mostly walk. You do not have a motorcycle licence or an IDP and do not want to get one. You are not comfortable riding in traffic, or you plan to drink in the evenings. Airport transfer with luggage. In all these cases ride-hailing is the sensible answer, and a car via Grab is safer than a scooter you are not confident on.
When a rental is the better choice
A week or longer. Two or more areas — Canggu and Uluwatu, or a week in Ubud. Beaches, waterfalls and mountain roads where drivers do not go. Early surf sessions and late dinners when no driver is around. Two people: a rental is one price, a ride is one price per ride. And the reason most people rent: leaving when you want, not when a driver accepts.
The mixed strategy
Many long-stayers do both: a monthly scooter for daily life and a Grab car for airport runs, nights out and rainy evenings. The monthly rental is cheap enough that the scooter pays for itself with two rides a day, and the car covers the situations where a scooter is the wrong tool.
What a rental requires that Grab does not
A licence to ride legally: an International Driving Permit with the motorcycle category (Iron Rent arranges one in about three days if you arrive without it). A deposit, refundable. Basic confidence in Bali traffic — if you have never ridden a scooter, a quiet first day in Sanur or Uluwatu before Canggu at rush hour. And a helmet on your head, always.

Is it cheaper to rent a motorbike or use Grab in Bali?

Can I use Grab to go from Canggu to Ubud?
You can, for 150,000–250,000 IDR one way, but drivers often decline long trips and the return is the same again. For day trips outside your area a rental is far cheaper.
Do I need a licence for Grab?
No — that is its main advantage. A rented motorbike requires an International Driving Permit with the motorcycle category to ride legally; Iron Rent can arrange one in about three days.
Which is safer?
A Grab car is safer than a scooter you are not confident on. If you ride regularly at home, a rental with a proper helmet is a normal way to get around Bali; start on quiet roads before Canggu traffic.
