What counts as long-term rental
At Iron Rent, long-term rental starts at 30 days. From that point the daily rate drops sharply and the bike is effectively yours for the season — most of our long-term riders are people living in Bali for a few months: remote workers, surf-season regulars, and families who need a second bike for school runs and groceries.
You do not have to know your exact end date on day one. A month is the minimum, and you extend as you go. If you already know you are staying three months, say so when booking — it is one agreement instead of three, and you keep the same bike history, the same deposit and the same service record throughout.
Swap your bike mid-rental for 100,000 IDR
This is the part no other rental in Bali offers, as far as we know: a long-term rental at Iron Rent is not tied to one motorbike.
Rented a scooter and then decided you want a proper motorcycle? Took a sport bike and realised Canggu traffic calls for something lighter? Tell us, and we swap it.
- 100,000 IDR per swap. That covers preparing the next bike — full service check, wash and handover.
- Plus the price difference if you move to a more expensive class, charged only for the days remaining.
- If both bikes cost the same, you pay only the 100,000 IDR. Swapping a Yamaha NMAX for a Honda Vario at the same monthly rate costs you that and nothing more.
- Swaps go sideways or up. You can move to the same class or a more expensive one. Moving down to a cheaper bike is possible too, but the rate stays the one you were already paying — the difference is not refunded.
There is no cap on how many times you swap. What we cannot promise is that a particular bike is free on the day you ask: if the model you want is already booked, or we are at peak load, we will offer an alternative or another date. Ask a few days ahead in high season and it is rarely a problem.
A scooter for the city in January, an adventure bike for a Java trip in February, a sport bike for a Mandalika track day in March — all inside one long-term rental.
The practical value is that you stop guessing. Nobody picks the right bike for three months on the first day, before they know which roads they will actually ride, how heavy the traffic is on their commute, or whether they will get into surfing on the other side of the island.
How a swap actually works
Nothing complicated:
- Message us on WhatsApp and say what you want to switch to — a model, or just the idea (“something lighter”, “something for long distances”).
- We check what is free on your dates and confirm the difference in rate, if there is one.
- We bring the new bike and take the old one. Delivery anywhere in Bali is free, or you can drop by the office if that is easier.
- You pay the 100,000 IDR and any rate difference for the days remaining. The rental keeps running — same agreement, same deposit.
The bike you receive has been through a service check and a wash before it reaches you. That is what the 100,000 IDR pays for.

Why a month costs about 2.5 times less per day
Take the Honda PCX 160. Day by day it is around 200,000 IDR, so thirty days would come to 6,000,000 IDR. The monthly rate is 2,000,000 IDR — about 67,000 IDR a day, three times cheaper.
Across our whole fleet the pattern holds: the monthly rate works out at roughly 2.5 to 2.8 times less per day than the short-term rate, whatever the class. The bigger the bike, the bigger the gap in absolute money — a Kawasaki Z900 is 2,500,000 IDR a day short-term against about 933,000 IDR a day on a month.
The break-even point sits at about two weeks. If you are staying longer than that, a monthly rate is cheaper than paying by the day even if you hand the bike back early.

Which bike suits which part of Bali
Where you are based matters more than what looks good in photos.
- Canggu, Seminyak, Kuta. Dense, slow, constant traffic. An automatic scooter of 125–160cc is genuinely the fastest way through it, and the easiest to park. A big sport bike here is hot, heavy and no quicker.
- Ubud and inland. Steeper roads, longer climbs. A 150–160cc scooter or a small naked bike pulls better two-up than a 125.
- Uluwatu and the Bukit. Longer distances at higher speed on wider roads. A maxi scooter such as the XMAX 250, or a 250 naked, is much more comfortable than a small scooter.
- Amed, Lovina, the north and east. Real distances, rough patches, luggage. This is where an adventure 250 like the Versys-X or V-Strom 250 SX earns its keep.
- Mandalika and Lombok. Sport bikes, and our Lombok office is right by the circuit.
This is exactly the case for swapping: base yourself in Canggu on a scooter, and take an adventure bike for the fortnight you spend riding the north coast.
Dry season and rainy season
Bali’s wet season runs roughly from November to March. It rarely rains all day, but when it does come down it is heavy and the road surface changes character within seconds.
What that means for a long rental:
- Worn tyres matter far more in the wet. On a long rental we replace them during the rental period, at our cost — you do not ride out the season on whatever it started with.
- Smaller wheels aquaplane in standing water more readily. If you are riding through the wet months, a bike with larger wheels — a maxi scooter or an adventure bike — is noticeably more settled.
- Storage matters. A bike parked outside all rainy season needs a cover, and the chain on a manual bike needs cleaning more often.
Riders who arrive in dry season on a small scooter and stay into the rains often swap to something bigger in November. That is the whole point of the swap costing 100,000 IDR rather than a new rental.
Who long-term rental suits
It works best when your plans are not fixed:
- Staying a season. Three months in Canggu or Uluwatu — a monthly rate plus swaps beats renting and returning bikes over and over.
- Riding for different reasons. Commuting on weekdays, exploring at weekends, and a track day or an island trip once in a while. One bike rarely covers all three.
- Still deciding what you like. Start on an automatic scooter, move to a naked 250 once you are confident, and go bigger later — without paying for a new rental each time.
- Travelling with someone. Two bikes on monthly rates, swapped as your routes change.
- Working here. If the bike is how you get to work every day, servicing being included is worth more than the headline rate.
What is included
Every long-term rental includes:
- two helmets;
- free delivery anywhere in Bali;
- servicing and maintenance for the whole rental period, in our own workshop;
- support in WhatsApp for as long as you have the bike.
Insurance is optional, with two deductible levels. The deposit comes back when the bike returns in the condition it left in.
Servicing being included is the part people underestimate. Over three months a scooter ridden daily will need at least one oil change, and often brake pads and a tyre. On a private rental that is your bill and your afternoon; here it is ours.
What you will spend on fuel
Fuel is not included, and it is the one running cost that is genuinely yours.
A 125–160cc scooter uses very little — a full tank is roughly four to five litres and takes you well past 200 km of ordinary riding. Petrol in Bali runs somewhere around 10,000–15,000 IDR a litre depending on the grade, so a normal week of commuting and beach runs is a small sum next to the rental itself. A 650 or a litre bike is a different story: expect several times that.
Fill up at proper Pertamina stations where you can. The roadside bottles are convenient in the middle of nowhere and fine in an emergency, but the fuel quality is a lottery.
Documents: what you need to rent, and what you need to ride
These are two different things, and mixing them up is the commonest misunderstanding we deal with.
- To take out the rental, your passport is enough. That is all we need to hand you the bike and sign the agreement.
- To ride legally on Bali’s roads you need a licence — your national one, plus an International Driving Permit with category A open. The IDP is a translation of your own licence and works alongside it, not instead of it.

Why it matters in practice, in two situations that genuinely happen in Bali: a police check, and an insurance claim after an accident. Without a valid permit a claim can be refused, which turns a scratched fairing into your bill instead of the insurer’s.
Checks are more common on the main tourist roads and around Canggu and Kuta. Helmet on, documents in the seat compartment, and there is nothing to discuss. More detail is in our guide to rental documents and the Bali scooter safety guide.
Deposit, damage and insurance
A deposit is held for the rental and returned when the bike comes back as it went out. Insurance is optional and comes with two deductible levels — worth taking on a long rental simply because the exposure runs for months rather than days.

Taking the bike to Lombok or Java
Long-term renters ask this constantly. The short version: it is possible, but it is not automatic — it needs to be agreed in advance, and the rules differ by bike and by destination. Do not simply put a rental bike on a ferry and hope.

Mistakes people make on long rentals
- Renting by the week, repeatedly. Four weekly rentals cost far more than one month. If you are staying, book the month.
- Choosing the bike for the trip you imagine, not the one you take. Most riders in Bali cover short urban distances most days. Be honest about that, and swap when the plan changes.
- Skipping the IDP. It is exactly what an insurer asks for after an accident — and if you do not have one, we can arrange it in about three days, so there is no reason to ride a whole season without.
- Ignoring the handover check. Photograph the bike when you get it. Our pre-rental checklist takes five minutes and settles arguments before they start.
- Leaving a full-face helmet on the mirror. Two helmets come with the bike, and they walk off if you leave them out.

Can I change the motorbike during a long-term rental?
Yes. At Iron Rent a swap costs 100,000 IDR, which covers the service check, wash and preparation of the next bike. If the new bike belongs to a more expensive class, you also pay the price difference for the remaining days. If the rate is the same, the 100,000 IDR is all you pay. You can also move to a cheaper bike, but then the rate stays the one you were already paying — we do not refund the difference.
How many times can I swap the bike?
There is no cap on the number of swaps. It is not an automatic right, though: if the model you want is already booked, or we are at peak load, we will offer an alternative or another date. In high season, ask a few days before you want to change.
Do I have to bring the bike in to swap it?
