Should a complete beginner ride at all
Honestly, Bali is not the easiest place to learn from scratch. Left-hand traffic, dense flow in Canggu and Seminyak, scooters and trucks in the same lane, and broken tarmac in places. Yet thousands start here and ride fine — as long as they do not overestimate themselves on day one. Which bike to start on
An automatic scooter, 110–160cc only: Honda Scoopy, PCX, Yamaha NMAX or Fazzio. No gears, no clutch — you think about the road, not the mechanics. It is light, narrow, forgiving and not scary to drop in a car park. Do not make a sport bike, a manual or anything over 160cc your first bike — that is a common mistake that ends in a fall. We show you the basics for free at the office
When you collect the bike, our team explains and shows how everything works, for free: throttle and brakes, pulling away and stopping, the key and the stand, how to park. You try it yourself next to the office until you feel calm. For many that is enough to set off carefully the first time. Want more confidence? A partner course on a range
If the basic briefing is not enough and you want a calm start, we send you to our partners: they take you to a closed training range and teach for 4 hours — pulling away, braking, cornering, emergency stops, with no traffic and no risk. That is usually enough for a confident start, and you can take a longer course if you want. It is paid and arranged separately — message us on WhatsApp and we will sort the details and book you in.
What to wear and bring
A helmet is always required — two helmets are included in the rental. For your first rides wear closed shoes, long trousers and something over your shoulders: tarmac at speed does not forgive shorts and flip-flops. Days are hot, so bring water and sunscreen. Key rules for the first days
- Keep left — Bali drives on the left.
- Ride slower than you want to. Scooters and cars will overtake you — that is normal, do not chase them.
- Beep on blind village bends and keep your distance.
- Do not ride in the rain for the first days: wet tarmac and road paint are very slippery.
- Never ride after alcohol — it is dangerous and a fine.
And know what happens if you damage the bike.
Licence and the law, short and honest
What we require: a passport is enough to rent from Iron Rent — we do not ask you to show a licence.
What the law requires: to ride legally in Bali you need an International Driving Permit (IDP) with category A. Without it, police checkpoints issue fines and insurance will not pay after a crash.
