Short answer
Pick the Honda Scoopy or the Yamaha Fazzio 125 if you will ride mostly solo around Canggu, Seminyak or Ubud and want the lightest, narrowest, simplest scooter to learn on. Pick the Yamaha NMAX 155 if you will often carry a passenger, plan trips to the mountains or want ABS. Small 110–125cc scooters are easy to start on, but two-up and on long climbs their power simply runs out.

At a glance
| Model | Engine | Power | ABS | Type | Monthly rental |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Honda Scoopy | 110cc | 9 HP | No | Small automatic scooter | from 83K IDR/day |
| Yamaha Fazzio 125 | 125cc | 8 HP | No | Small automatic scooter (hybrid-assist) | from 67K IDR/day |
| Yamaha NMAX 155 | 155cc | 15 HP | Yes | Automatic maxi-scooter | from 83K IDR/day |
All three are twist-and-go automatics: no clutch, no gears. The Scoopy and the Fazzio are small scooters of about 95 kg on 12-inch wheels, with tanks of about 4 and about 5 litres. The NMAX is a step up in size: about 130 kg, 13-inch wheels, a seat at about 765 mm, a tank of about 7 litres, about 25 litres under the seat, and ABS, which the two small scooters do not have.
Riding in Bali traffic
For a first week in Bali, the Scoopy and the Fazzio are the easiest place to start. They are light and narrow, park anywhere, and are completely at home in the traffic of Canggu, Berawa and Ubud. If you drop one while turning around in a narrow lane, you can pick it up on your own. Both are relaxed at town speeds and do not punish a clumsy hand on the throttle.
The NMAX is still easy for a beginner, just bigger. It is about 35 kg heavier and wider, so filtering through the tightest gaps takes more care, and pushing it backwards out of a parking spot takes more effort. In return it feels more settled on the bypass roads and over broken tarmac, and its ABS helps on wet painted lines, gravel and sand near the beaches, where a locked front wheel on a small scooter is a common way to fall. Whichever you choose, start in quiet streets in the morning, not at rush hour on the Canggu shortcut.
Two-up and luggage
This is where honesty matters. The Scoopy and the Fazzio will carry two people around town at low speed, but with about 8–9 HP the power is gone quickly: pulling away uphill with a passenger is slow, overtaking is out of the question, and the short seat leaves little room for two adults. Storage under the seat is small; plan on a backpack.
The NMAX is built for two. The seat is longer, the extra power lets you pull away and merge with a passenger without drama, and under the seat there is room for a helmet or a day's shopping. All three come with two helmets and a phone holder. If you are a couple sharing one scooter, the NMAX is the more sensible first choice even if it is a little more to handle.
Hills, Kintamani and long rides
Bali is not flat once you leave the coast. On the climb to Bedugul, Munduk or the Kintamani rim, a 110–125cc scooter runs out of power: solo you will crawl up the steepest sections, and two-up it may not be safe or possible to keep going. Even the roads around Ubud, Tegallalang and Campuhan ridge are steep enough to notice it with a passenger. Going down, small scooters without ABS need gentle, early braking on both brakes.
The NMAX handles the trip to Ubud, Uluwatu or Tanah Lot comfortably and climbs to Kintamani solo without trouble; two-up the power is marginal on long climbs, but it gets there at a steady pace. If mountains are your main plan, look at the Honda ADV 160 or the Yamaha XMAX 250 rather than a small scooter.
Who should rent which
- Rent the Honda Scoopy if you ride solo, mostly in town and to the beach, and want a light, easy scooter that parks anywhere.
- Rent the Yamaha Fazzio 125 for the same kind of riding: short trips, solo, town and beach; it is equally light and narrow.
- Rent the Yamaha NMAX 155 if you will often ride with a passenger, plan day trips to the mountains, or simply want ABS on your first scooter in Bali.
To rent you only need a passport. To ride legally in Indonesia you need a national licence with the motorcycle category and an International Driving Permit; we can help arrange the IDP through our partner International Drivers Association. Delivery and pickup are free within 20 km of our Kerobokan office on rentals of 3 days or more. If you start on a small scooter and find you need more, a swap mid-rental costs 100,000 IDR for washing and preparing the bike; moving to a pricier bike means paying the difference.
Fuel and running
Pertalite is not allowed on any of our bikes. For the Scoopy and the Fazzio, use Pertamax; the NMAX, in the 150–250cc class, needs at least Pertamax 92. Fill up at Pertamina stations rather than roadside bottles.
The small tanks, about 4 litres on the Scoopy and about 5 on the Fazzio, are enough for town riding but mean frequent stops on longer trips; fill up before leaving the south. The NMAX's tank of about 7 litres goes a little further. Servicing during the rental is done in our own workshop in Kerobokan; message us on WhatsApp if a warning light comes on or something feels wrong.
FAQ
Which scooter is easiest for a complete beginner in Bali?
The Honda Scoopy or the Yamaha Fazzio 125: about 95 kg, narrow and automatic, they are the simplest to learn on in town traffic. The Yamaha NMAX 155 is also automatic and beginner friendly, just heavier.
Can I ride a Scoopy or Fazzio with a passenger?
Around town at low speed, yes. On hills and long climbs, with about 8–9 HP, the power runs out quickly; for regular riding two-up choose the Yamaha NMAX 155.
Can a Scoopy or Fazzio get to Kintamani?
Solo, slowly, on the steep sections it will crawl. Two-up we do not recommend it. For mountain trips take the NMAX 155 or a bigger scooter such as the Honda ADV 160 or Yamaha XMAX 250.
Do the Scoopy and Fazzio have ABS?
No. Of these three, only the Yamaha NMAX 155 has ABS.
What fuel do these scooters need?
Pertalite is not allowed on any of our bikes. Use Pertamax for the Scoopy and Fazzio; the NMAX 155 needs at least Pertamax 92.
