Short answer
If you have never ridden a scooter, Bali is a workable place to start — but only on an automatic, only on a small or mid-size scooter, and only after an hour of practice somewhere quiet. Start on a Honda Scoopy or Yamaha Fazzio if you ride alone, a Honda PCX 160 or Yamaha NMAX 155 if you carry a passenger. At handover our team shows you the basics for free; for real confidence, our partners run a paid 4-hour course on a closed range. Below is the honest version of what a first week on two wheels in Bali looks like.
- Updated: 12 October 2026.
- Written by Iron Rent, renting motorcycles in Bali since 2019 from our office in Kerobokan.
- Riding has risks; this guide reduces them, it does not remove them. To ride legally you need a licence with the motorcycle category and an International Driving Permit.
- Price: scooters from 200,000 IDR per day; the longer the rental, the lower the daily rate, and a month never costs more than the monthly rate.
- Included: two helmets, a phone holder, servicing in our own workshop.
- Delivery: free within 20 km of the Kerobokan office on rentals of 3+ days; the airport costs 200,000 IDR.
- Deposit: refundable, returned in the currency it was paid in.
- Documents: a passport is enough to rent; to ride legally you need your national licence with the motorcycle category plus an IDP.
- Protection: optional damage protection for the rented bike (levels MAX and MIN).
Which scooter for a first-time rider
Automatic only. Every scooter below is twist-and-go: no clutch, no gears, right hand for throttle and front brake, left hand for the rear brake. The choice is about size and weight, not power. Prices are the monthly rate shown per day; shorter rentals cost more per day.
| Model | cc | HP | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Honda Scoopy | 110 | 9 | from 83K IDR/day |
| Yamaha Fazzio 125 | 125 | 8 | from 67K IDR/day |
| Honda PCX 160 | 157 | 16 | from 67K IDR/day |
| Yamaha NMAX 155 | 155 | 15 | from 83K IDR/day |
- Honda Scoopy, Yamaha Fazzio 125 — light, low seat, gentle throttle. Easiest to balance at walking pace and to push around a parking spot. The right first scooter for one person on flat ground: Canggu, Seminyak, Sanur, Nusa Dua.
- Honda PCX 160, Yamaha NMAX 155 — heavier and taller, but steadier at speed, with bigger wheels and better brakes. Pick one of these if you ride with a passenger or plan hills (Ubud, Uluwatu); a 110cc with two aboard struggles on climbs. Spend your first hour alone on it before taking anyone.
Skip the Yamaha Aerox 155 and anything 250cc for now: sharper throttle, more weight, no benefit to a beginner.
What you get at handover, and the free basics
Every rental includes two helmets and a phone holder. At delivery we go through the bike's condition together and photograph it, then our team explains and shows the basics for free: where the throttle, brakes and indicators are, how to pull away smoothly, how to stop, and how to park and lock the bike. This takes 10–15 minutes and is a demonstration, not a riding course.
If you want more than that — and most true beginners should — our partners run a paid 4-hour course on a closed range. Ask us on WhatsApp at +62 812 2885 3301 for the details and dates. A morning on a closed range before you meet Bali traffic is the single most useful thing a first-time rider can do.
Where to practise your first hour
Do not start on a main road. Ask for delivery to a quiet place or ride at walking pace to one of these:
- Villa lanes early in the morning — between 06:00 and 08:00 the small lanes in Canggu, Berawa, Umalas and Sanur are nearly empty.
- Inside Nusa Dua (ITDC area) — wide, smooth boulevards with roundabouts and little traffic; the easiest tarmac in Bali.
- Empty car parks — beach car parks before 08:00 or supermarket car parks after closing are fine for figure-eights and emergency stops.
Practise in this order: pull away and stop ten times; slow U-turns both ways; braking from 30 km/h with both brakes until it is calm and straight; then a loop of the block with indicators and mirror checks. Only after that, a short trip to a café on a quiet road. Give it a day before you ride on the bypass or into Kuta, and a few days before you take a passenger.
Rules of the road in Bali, in practice
- Ride on the left. Overtaking is on the right in theory; in practice scooters filter on both sides. Keep left, keep steady, let faster riders pass.
- Helmets on, straps closed — rider and passenger, every trip. Police checks on this are routine.
- Documents: to ride legally you need your national licence with the motorcycle category plus an International Driving Permit. We help arrange an IDP through our partner, the International Drivers Association.
- The horn is a greeting, not an insult. A short beep means "I am here" before a blind corner or when passing.
- Turning right across traffic is the hardest manoeuvre. Indicate early, wait for a real gap, and if in doubt pull in on the left and wait.
- Phone in the holder, not in your hand. Set navigation before you move.
- Speed: 40 km/h feels fast on a scooter in traffic. There is no prize for arriving two minutes earlier.
- Dogs, chickens, sand and rain — expect all four. Cover the brakes near villages and slow down when the road is wet or dusty.
The mistakes beginners actually make
- Grabbing the front brake at low speed or in a turn. Squeeze both, gently, and finish braking before you lean.
- Looking at the front wheel instead of where you want to go. Look up and through the turn.
- Riding in flip-flops and a swimsuit. Closed shoes, long trousers and a shirt that covers the shoulders turn a small slide into a bruise instead of a hospital visit.
- Riding at night in the first days. Lighting is poor, dogs are out, and other riders are tired. Be home before dark for the first week.
- Two adults on a 110cc up a hill. It is slow, it wobbles, and it tempts you to open the throttle on the way down. Take a PCX or NMAX for two.
- Riding after a drink. Apart from the obvious, our damage protection does not apply if the rider is not sober.
If you drop the bike: what to do, and what it costs
Low-speed drops happen to beginners — in a car park, at a stop, on a sandy corner. Here is the procedure and the money side, honestly.
- Stop safely and check yourself first. Then move the bike off the road only if it is blocking traffic.
- Message or call us from the scene at +62 812 2885 3301 before you ride on. Send photos of the damage and of the place. Reporting from the scene is a condition of the damage protection, and it also means we can tell you whether the bike is safe to ride.
- If another vehicle is involved, do not agree to pay anyone or accept payment before we arrive or tell you what to do.
Money: the refundable deposit you paid at handover is the first layer; its amount depends on the bike class and is confirmed in writing before you pay. Small scratches on a mirror or a panel are priced as the actual repair in our own workshop and deducted from the deposit. For bigger damage, our optional damage protection reduces your share: with MAX you pay the deposit/deductible plus 5% of the rest of the repair, with MIN the deposit/deductible plus 30%. It covers the rented bike only, not people or third parties, and only if the accident is reported from the scene, the rider is sober and is the named rider. For a nervous beginner, MAX is the option that makes a dropped scooter a small story instead of a ruined trip.
A sensible first week
Day 1: delivery to your villa or hotel, the free handover demonstration, an hour in the lanes. Day 2: short daytime trips on quiet roads, home before dark. Day 3–4: a longer ride — Canggu to Tanah Lot, Sanur to Denpasar, Nusa Dua to Jimbaran bay — in the morning, when traffic and heat are lower. Only after that: a passenger, the bypass, or the climb to Ubud or Uluwatu.
Delivery and pickup are free within 20 km of our Kerobokan office on rentals of 3 days or more; for shorter rentals the delivery price is confirmed before booking. During the rental the bike is serviced in our own workshop, and if the scooter you picked turns out too small or too big, a swap costs 100,000 IDR — a pricier model means paying the difference, a cheaper one keeps your rental price. If you still have doubts after reading this, ask us about lessons before you book; it is a better conversation to have than the one after a fall.
FAQ
Which scooter should a complete beginner rent in Bali?
An automatic 110–160cc: Honda Scoopy or Yamaha Fazzio 125 if you ride alone on flat ground, Honda PCX 160 or Yamaha NMAX 155 if you carry a passenger or plan hills. Not a manual, not a sport bike.
Does Iron Rent teach you to ride?
At handover our team shows the basics for free — throttle, brakes, pulling away, stopping, parking. For a proper lesson, our partners run a paid 4-hour course on a closed range; ask us on WhatsApp for details.
Where can I practise riding a scooter in Bali?
Villa lanes early in the morning (06:00–08:00), the wide boulevards inside Nusa Dua, or an empty beach or supermarket car park. Spend an hour there before any main road.
Do I need a licence to rent a scooter as a beginner?
To rent from us, a passport is enough. To ride legally you need your national licence with the motorcycle category plus an International Driving Permit; we help arrange an IDP through our partner, the International Drivers Association.
What happens if I drop the scooter?
Stop, check yourself, and message us from the scene with photos before riding on. Small damage is priced as the actual repair and taken from the deposit; with MAX protection your share of a bigger repair is the deductible plus 5%, with MIN plus 30%.
Are helmets included for a passenger?
Yes, two helmets and a phone holder come with every rental. For two adults choose a PCX 160 or NMAX 155 rather than a 110cc scooter, and ride alone for your first hour.
