Short answer

Pick the Honda CBR500R if you want a lighter-feeling, even-tempered sport bike that is easy to live with and a little cheaper per day. Pick the Kawasaki Ninja 650 if you will cover real distance, often ride with a passenger or simply want the stronger pull of the bigger twin. Both are manual, faired parallel-twins with ABS for riders who already have motorcycle experience; neither is a first bike for Bali.

The two bikes are closer than the engine sizes suggest. Both weigh about 192–193 kg, both have a 6-speed manual gearbox, a full fairing and ABS. The CBR500R has a seat at about 785 mm and a tank of about 17 litres; the Ninja 650 sits at about 790 mm with a tank of about 15 litres. The real difference is the engine: about 47 HP against about 68 HP, and the Kawasaki pulls noticeably harder from low revs.

Riding in Bali traffic

Neither bike is made for the queues of Canggu, Seminyak or Kuta. You sit leaning forward on clip-on style bars, the engine heat rises up at walking pace, and a bike of about 190 kg is wider and heavier to push than any scooter. On the busiest stretches of Batu Bolong or the Sunset Road junctions, scooters will filter past you.

Of the two, the CBR500R is the calmer companion in town. Its engine is even rather than aggressive, the clutch and throttle are easy to modulate, and the lower power makes stop-and-go riding less tiring. The Ninja 650 is not difficult, but the bigger twin gets hotter in traffic and the lean tires you sooner. Both have ABS, which matters on wet painted lines, gravel at junctions and sand blown onto the road near the beaches.

Two-up and luggage

Both bikes come with two helmets and a phone holder, and both can carry a passenger, but neither is a touring bike. The pillion seat is small and set high, so your passenger sits perched behind you. For short rides — dinner in Seminyak, a trip to a beach club in Uluwatu — either is fine.

For regular two-up riding the Ninja 650 has the edge: the stronger engine carries two people up hills without having to work, and its sport-tourer character is slightly more relaxed for both riders. There is no under-seat storage on either bike, so travel light with a backpack. If you plan long trips with a passenger and luggage, a Honda CB500X, a Kawasaki Versys 650 or a Yamaha XMAX 250 will be more comfortable.

Hills, Kintamani and long rides

This is where both bikes make sense. On the road to Bedugul, Munduk or the Kintamani rim the fairing keeps the wind off your chest and the riding position finally feels right. The CBR500R is exactly enough for these roads solo: smooth, predictable and never short of power on a climb. The Ninja 650 adds a margin that you feel two-up or when overtaking trucks on the long climbs out of the south.

On narrow mountain roads neither bike can use its full power, and you will meet trucks, dogs, wet leaves and gravel in the corners. Ride at a pace where you can stop within the distance you can see. On long descents use both brakes and engine braking. The CBR500R's slightly larger tank gives a little more range, which helps in the hills, where fuel stations are further apart.

Who should rent which

  • Rent the Honda CBR500R if you want a sport bike that stays friendly: a rider stepping up from a 250–400cc bike, someone who rides mostly solo, or anyone who wants the sport-bike look and position without heavy power.
  • Rent the Kawasaki Ninja 650 if you ride longer distances on tarmac, often take a passenger, or already ride a middleweight at home and would find the CBR500R too mild.
  • Rent neither as your first motorcycle, or if you mostly ride short trips around Canggu: a maxi-scooter is easier there.

These are manual bikes of about 190 kg, so you need real experience with a clutch and gears, not only a scooter background, and your licence must include the motorcycle category. To rent you only need a passport. To ride legally in Indonesia you need a national licence with the motorcycle category and an International Driving Permit; we can help arrange the IDP through our partner International Drivers Association. Delivery and pickup are free within 20 km of our Kerobokan office on rentals of 3 days or more. If you change your mind mid-rental, a swap costs 100,000 IDR for washing and preparing the bike.

Fuel and running

Both engines are bigger than 250cc, so both bikes need Pertamax Turbo 98. Pertalite is not allowed on any of our bikes. Fill up at Pertamina stations rather than roadside bottles, which rarely contain the right fuel, and refuel before you head into the mountains.

Servicing during the rental is done in our own workshop in Kerobokan. Check the chain and tyres look normal before long rides, and message us on WhatsApp if a warning light comes on or something feels wrong.

FAQ

Is the Honda CBR500R or the Kawasaki Ninja 650 better for a beginner?

Neither is a beginner bike. The CBR500R is the more forgiving of the two because of its lower power, but both are manual bikes of about 190 kg for riders with motorcycle experience and a licence with the motorcycle category.

Which is better with a passenger?

The Kawasaki Ninja 650. Its stronger engine carries two people uphill without effort. For long two-up trips, a Honda CB500X, Kawasaki Versys 650 or Yamaha XMAX 250 is more comfortable than either sport bike.

Can I ride the CBR500R or Ninja 650 to Kintamani?

Yes, these mountain roads are where both bikes feel right. Ride at a pace that suits narrow roads with trucks, dogs and gravel, and refuel before you climb.

Do both bikes have ABS?

Yes. The Honda CBR500R and the Kawasaki Ninja 650 in our fleet both have ABS.

What fuel do the CBR500R and Ninja 650 need?

Pertamax Turbo 98. Pertalite is not allowed on any of our bikes.
