Short answer

Ubud is not flat, and that is the main thing to plan for when renting a scooter here. The roads to Tegallalang, Campuhan and the villages north of town climb and drop constantly, so a 110cc scooter with two people aboard will struggle where a Yamaha NMAX 155, Honda PCX 160 or Honda ADV does not notice. Iron Rent delivers to Ubud from our Kerobokan office: free on rentals of 3 days or more if your address is within 20 km, otherwise 200,000 IDR. Below: live prices, which model for which rider, the roads, parking in the centre and realistic day trips.

Scooter prices for Ubud

Shops around Jl. Monkey Forest and Jl. Hanoman mostly rent 110–125cc automatics, which is fine for the centre and hard work on the hills. Our prices are the same whether you collect the bike in Kerobokan or we deliver it to your Ubud villa; what changes the per-day price is the rental length, not the destination.

ModelccHPFrom, per day (monthly rate)
Honda Scoopy1109from 83K IDR/day
Yamaha NMAX 15515515from 83K IDR/day
Honda PCX 16015716from 67K IDR/day

A 3–6 day rental costs roughly two to three times the monthly per-day rate, 7–14 days sits in between, and from 22 days you pay the month price. The deposit is refundable and comes back in the currency you paid. Two helmets, a phone holder and servicing in our workshop during the rental are included.

Delivery to Ubud: the 20 km rule

Our office is in Kerobokan, in the south; Ubud is 60–90 minutes away by road depending on Denpasar traffic. The delivery rule is simple: on rentals of 3 days or more, delivery and pickup are free within 20 km of the office and 200,000 IDR beyond that. Ubud sits right around that line. Addresses on the southern side of town are sometimes inside the 20 km, the centre and the villages to the north — Tegallalang, Payangan, Petulu — are usually beyond it. Send us the villa name or a Google Maps pin on WhatsApp +62 812 2885 3301 and we tell you which it is before you book. For rentals under 3 days delivery is always paid and confirmed before booking.

Deliveries run 10:00–19:00. If you are coming from the south anyway, some guests collect the bike at our office (open 09:00–20:00) and ride up to Ubud — a 60–90 minute first ride through Denpasar traffic, which is a lot for a first day on a scooter. Having it delivered is usually the calmer start.

Ubud roads: hills, narrow lanes and the centre

The centre is a handful of narrow streets — Jl. Raya Ubud, Jl. Monkey Forest, Jl. Hanoman, Jl. Goutama — with a one-way loop on Monkey Forest and Hanoman and traffic that stops dead when a tour bus meets a delivery truck. From about 10:00 to 18:00 expect to crawl; early morning and after 19:00 it empties. Parking in the centre is on the street or in small paid lots behind the market and near the palace; attendants wave you in and take a small cash fee.

Outside the centre the character changes fast. Jl. Raya Campuhan drops steeply to the bridge and climbs again towards Sayan; the road north to Tegallalang is a long gradient with buses; the lanes to Penestanan, Nyuh Kuning and Mas are a single car wide with blind corners, dogs and ceremonies that close the road for an hour. Surfaces are patchier than in the south, with moss on shaded corners that stays slippery long after rain. Ride slower than you would in Canggu, keep to your side, and give buses the room they will take anyway.

Which scooter for Ubud: NMAX, PCX and ADV against the Scoopy

In Canggu we tell solo riders a Honda Scoopy is plenty. In Ubud we say it more carefully: on your own, mostly in the centre, a Scoopy is fine. Two people, bags and the climb to Tegallalang or up from the Campuhan bridge is where 110cc runs out of breath and you find yourself at walking pace in the middle of the road.

  • Yamaha NMAX 155 — the sensible default for Ubud: 15 HP, bigger wheels, room for two, under-seat space for a helmet. Climbs with a passenger without drama.
  • Honda PCX 160 — same class, a slightly lower seat and a smoother ride on broken tarmac; many couples prefer it for the comfort.
  • Honda ADV 150 / ADV 160 (2026) — more ground clearance and longer suspension travel, the calmest of our scooters on the patchy, mossy lanes north of town and in rainy-season puddles. Taller seat, so check your reach at handover.
  • Yamaha XMAX 250 — for two adults doing long day trips to Kintamani or Sidemen; heavy for the centre's parking, effortless on the hills.
  • Honda Scoopy — one rider, light luggage, centre and nearby villages only.

Rice-terrace lanes are tarmac and fine on any of these; dirt tracks, gravel and the jeep roads around Batur are not. Off-road riding is allowed only on our enduro bikes (Honda CRF150L, Kawasaki KLX 150 / 230, KLX 230 SM). Scooters stay on paved roads, and damage protection terms apply as usual.

Day trips from Ubud by scooter

  • Tegallalang rice terraces — 20–30 minutes north on the main road; go before 09:00 to beat the buses. Parking is at the cafés along the road.
  • Tirta Empul and Gunung Kawi (Tampaksiring) — 30–40 minutes north-east; gentle gradients, good tarmac. Sarongs are available at the temples.
  • Kintamani and the Batur crater rim — 60–80 minutes of steady climbing; cooler and often cloudy by noon, so leave early. The descent back is where brakes get hot: use engine braking and both brakes gently. Fuel up in Tampaksiring or Kintamani.
  • Sidemen valley — 60–90 minutes east via Gianyar and Klungkung; quiet roads, one or two long climbs where the NMAX, PCX or ADV earns its keep.
  • Campuhan Ridge — this one is a walk, not a ride; park near the Warwick Ibah entrance and go on foot.

Allow more time than Google Maps suggests, carry a rain layer from October onwards, and plan to be back before dark: village roads are unlit, and dogs and potholes are easier to see in daylight.

Rain, fuel and servicing while you are in Ubud

Ubud gets more rain than the coast, and the showers start earlier in the afternoon. In the wet season (November–March) do the rides in the morning. Mossy corners under trees, wet leaves and the painted lines in the centre are the slippery spots; the first minutes of rain are the worst. If a lane turns into a brown stream, wait it out in a warung rather than ride through — you cannot see the holes.

Our 150–250cc scooters take Pertamax 92 or better; Pertalite is forbidden and is written into the contract. Servicing during the rental is done by our own workshop; from Ubud that usually means we come to you, or we bring a replacement bike if something cannot be fixed on the spot. A swap to a different model costs 100,000 IDR (washing and preparing the bike); to a pricier bike you pay the difference, to a cheaper one the price stays — useful if you booked a Scoopy and discover the hills.

Documents, deposit and damage protection

To rent, a passport is enough. To ride legally you need your national licence with the motorcycle category plus an International Driving Permit; we can help arrange an IDP through our partner International Drivers Association — ask before you arrive. Police checks are less frequent around Ubud than on Sunset Road in the south, but they happen on the main road from Denpasar and near the centre.

The deposit is refundable in the same currency. Optional damage protection comes as MAX (you pay the deposit/deductible plus 5% of the rest of the repair) or MIN (plus 30%); it covers the rented scooter only, not people or third parties, and only if the incident is reported to us from the scene, the rider is sober and is the named rider. A slide on a mossy Ubud corner is exactly what it exists for — call us before moving the bike, take photos, then follow our instructions.

FAQ

How much does scooter rental in Ubud cost?

Per day it depends on the rental length, not on Ubud itself. On a monthly rate the Honda PCX 160, Yamaha NMAX 155 and Honda ADV 150 come to well under 100,000 IDR per day; a 3–6 day rental costs roughly two to three times that. The live prices are in the table above and the price for your dates is confirmed in writing before you pay.

Do you deliver scooters to Ubud, and is it free?

Yes. On rentals of 3 days or more delivery is free if your address is within 20 km of our Kerobokan office and 200,000 IDR if it is beyond. Central Ubud and the villages to the north are usually beyond; send us the address and we confirm before booking. Under 3 days delivery is paid.

Which scooter is best for the hills around Ubud?

For two people or any riding north of town, the Yamaha NMAX 155, Honda PCX 160 or Honda ADV 150 / 160. A Honda Scoopy is fine for a solo rider staying in the centre but struggles two-up on the climbs to Tegallalang and Campuhan.

Can I ride a scooter from Ubud to Kintamani?

Yes, on a 150cc-class scooter or bigger. It is 60–80 minutes of steady climbing; leave early, fuel up in Tampaksiring, and use engine braking and both brakes gently on the way down. Stay on the tarmac — the jeep tracks around Batur are for enduro bikes only.

What do I need to rent a scooter in Ubud?

A passport to rent; your national licence with the motorcycle category plus an International Driving Permit to ride legally. We can help arrange an IDP through our partner International Drivers Association. A refundable deposit is returned in the same currency.

Can I change the scooter if the one I booked is too weak for the hills?

Yes. A swap costs 100,000 IDR (washing and preparing the bike). Moving to a pricier model you pay the difference; moving to a cheaper one the rental price stays.
