Lakes Beratan, Buyan and Tamblingan lie at about 1,200 metres: cool air, afternoon fog and roads that climb in long bends. This is how to ride the highlands well.
Bedugul is the pass on the main road between the south and the north coast, with the Ulun Danu Beratan temple on Lake Beratan. From there a narrow ridge road runs past the Wanagiri viewpoints above Lakes Buyan and Tamblingan and drops into Munduk, a village of clove and coffee gardens and waterfalls. People come for the cool air, hikes and waterfalls, or stop here on the way to Lovina.
We deliver to Bedugul and Munduk: it is outside our free zone, so the fee depends on the distance and the length of the rental and is confirmed on WhatsApp before you pay. The alternative is to pick the bike up at our Kerobokan office (open daily 09:00–20:00) and ride up yourself — Bedugul is 1.5–2 hours from Canggu, Munduk 2–2.5 hours. It is a great first day, as long as you set off before noon and beat the afternoon fog.
To rent you only need a passport. To ride legally in Indonesia you need your national licence with the motorcycle category plus an International Driving Permit; we help arrange the IDP through our partner International Drivers Association.
This is not a place for a 125cc scooter with two people aboard. For one rider the sensible minimum is a 150cc+ scooter: Yamaha NMAX 155, Honda PCX 160, Yamaha Aerox 155 or Honda ADV 160 — the ADV’s longer suspension also handles the broken patches on the Munduk road. Two people with bags should take a Yamaha XMAX 250 or a motorcycle.
For touring the lakes and continuing north, the Honda CB150X, Honda CB500X and Kawasaki Versys 650 are the comfortable choices. The Honda CRF150L and Kawasaki KLX 230 suit the steep village roads around Munduk — on tarmac and gravel access roads only; trails and dirt are prohibited by the contract. Fill up at a Pertamina station on the main road before turning off to Munduk.
