Motorcycle & Scooter Rental in Sidemen

The Sidemen valley runs north from Klungkung (Semarapura) towards Mount Agung, with terraced rice fields on both sides and villages known for hand-woven songket cloth. On clear mornings Agung fills the view. People come for walks through the rice fields, quiet guesthouses and as a stop between Ubud and the east coast.

We deliver to Sidemen: it is outside our free zone, so the fee depends on the distance and the length of the rental and is confirmed on WhatsApp before you pay. The easy alternative is to pick the bike up at our Kerobokan office (open daily 09:00–20:00) and ride there — 1.5–2 hours from Canggu along the coast bypass to Klungkung and then up the valley. It is one of the nicest first days of a Bali trip.

To rent you only need a passport. To ride legally in Indonesia you need your national licence with the motorcycle category plus an International Driving Permit; we help arrange the IDP through our partner International Drivers Association.

What the roads are like

  • Valley road. The road from Klungkung up through Sidemen is narrow, with drops to the rice fields and few barriers. Oncoming cars take the middle, so keep your speed down on bends.
  • Sand trucks. Trucks carrying sand and stone from the Mount Agung quarries use the roads towards Selat and Rendang and spill sand on the corners.
  • Steep side lanes. Lanes to hillside guesthouses and viewpoints are often steep concrete strips with loose gravel. If in doubt, park below and walk up rather than stall halfway.
  • Rain and cloud. Towards Selat and Rendang the road climbs, and in the wet season afternoon rain and low cloud are common.
  • Ceremonies. Villages close roads for temple ceremonies with little notice. Wait, or follow the local detour.

Which bike to choose

A 150cc+ scooter is the sensible minimum here: the Honda ADV 160 and Yamaha NMAX 155 handle the steep lanes to hillside villas far better than a 125cc, especially with two people. For one light rider staying on the main valley road, a Honda Scoopy or Yamaha Fazzio 125 is enough.

If Sidemen is part of an east Bali loop with Besakih, Amed or Candidasa, take a Honda CB150X, Honda CB500X or Kawasaki Versys 650. The Honda CRF150L and Kawasaki KLX 230 are good on steep concrete lanes and gravel access roads — tarmac and gravel only; trails, dirt and rice-field paths are prohibited by the contract.

Where to ride from here

  • Klungkung (Semarapura) and Kerta Gosa — 20–30 min; the old royal court pavilions, and the nearest large Pertamina stations.
  • Besakih temple — 40–60 min via Selat and Rendang; a steep climb, go in the morning before cloud covers Agung.
  • Candidasa — 40–60 min; down to the coast road for the sea and the old village of Tenganan.
  • Ubud — 1–1.5 h via Klungkung and Gianyar; the Gianyar stretch is slow with afternoon traffic.
  • Amed — 1.5–2 h via Amlapura; winding roads, fill up in Amlapura before the coast.

Questions we get

How much does it cost to rent a scooter for Sidemen?

Scooters start from 200,000 IDR per day, and monthly rentals from 2,000,000 IDR. A month never costs more than the monthly rate, so a long stay in the valley is much cheaper per day. Every rental includes two helmets and a phone holder.

Do you deliver to Sidemen?

Yes. Sidemen is outside our free zone, so the delivery fee depends on the distance and the rental length and is confirmed on WhatsApp before you pay. Deliveries run 10:00–19:00. Or pick the bike up in Kerobokan and ride there in 1.5–2 hours.

What documents do I need?

To rent, only your passport. To ride legally in Indonesia you need your national licence with the motorcycle category and an International Driving Permit. We help arrange the IDP through our partner International Drivers Association.

When can I see Mount Agung from Sidemen?

Usually in the early morning, before clouds build up; the dry season (roughly April–October) gives the best chances. There is no guarantee — on some days the mountain stays hidden.

Is Sidemen a good stop on the way to Amed?

Yes. Canggu to Sidemen is 1.5–2 hours and Sidemen to Amed another 1.5–2 hours, so splitting the ride with a night in the valley turns one long day into two easy ones.
